今日は "Born a crime"、邦訳「トレバー・ノア　生まれたことが犯罪！？」です。

アメリカでは 『The Daily Show』 という、バラエティ番組があります。

政治を風刺するニュース番組風を想像してください。

人気度でいえば、全盛期のめちゃイケやアメトーク、それ以上かもしれません。選挙に少なからず影響も与えます。

トレバー・ノアはその番組の現司会者です。

Aki のアメリカ留学時代、司会者はジョン・スチュワートという人でした。

人気は圧倒的です。

Aki のルームメイトの楽しみは 『The Daily Show』 を見ることです。

Aki の密かな楽しみは、そのルームメイトが番組を見て、ニコニコしているのを見ることでした。

帰国後数年してからジョン・スチュワートから新司会者に代わると知ったとき、番組は終わったと感じました。

Aki はトレバー・ノア司会の 『The Daily Show』 を見たことはないのですが、ネットの評価を見ると、どうやら彼はやってのけたらしいです。

前置きはこれぐらいにして、本の内容です。

自伝です。

大人気コメディアンが書く自伝です。

彼は白人と黒人の混血、カラードです。

「アパルトヘイト」を話題にすれば話は重くなりがちですが、コメディアンの彼の手にかかれば、それはもうすべらない話です。

オーディオブックがあるのですが、彼のナレーションです。

これも良いです。

"Born a crime" by Trevor Noah!!

Actually, I'm not familiar with him.

When I was in America, Jon Stewart hosted "The Daily Show".

Back then, his influence was enormous.

Anyway, Trevor Noah.

I really loved this book. I listened the audiobook as well, loved it too.

The Audiobook is narrated by Trevor Noah himself. 

His way of writing, the structure of the book, and his narration are all good. 

This is his autobiography where he mentions apartheid, too. 

While I was reading, I felt like I was listening his stand up comedy.

I simply liked it.

4321 by Paul Auster

こんにちは、最近の夏の洋書セールで調子に乗ってる Aki です。

今日紹介するのは、ポール・オースターの「4321」 です。

邦訳はまだですが、確実にされますね。柴田さんですかね。

アメリカ文学の作家として超有名人なので、知ってる人は多いと思います。

Aki は彼の作品を読んだのがかなり前で、日本語で読んだのか英語で読んだのか覚えていません。ストーリーは何となく覚えていますが。

この本を手に取ってみた理由は、ずばり本のぶ厚さでしょうか。

京極夏彦さんを思い出しました。日本に比べ、アメリカの書籍は厚いことが多いです。

どこかで聞いたのですが、アメリカでは厚い本をプールサイドなどで読むのがカッコいいとされているようです（完全に記憶違いだったらすみません）。

さて本の中身ですが、主人公ファーガソンの人生を幼少から追っていく話です。

文学では王道ですね。ただ、その話の進み方が普通とは異なります。それは....

4つのパラレルワールドです。

自分の人生を振り返ってみて、「もしあの時、あれをしてたら今の自分はどうなっているんだろう」、「もし自分の親がこんな風だったら、今の自分は...」などと考えることはありませんか。

それです。4人の分身がそれぞれの人生を歩みます。

ページ数が多いため、邦訳では上巻・下巻に分かれるかもしれません。

この本を読んでいる間、自分の世界が 4321 に染まっていました。

どっぷりとこの世界に浸かりました。京極夏彦さんの作品を読んでいる時には、よくこの感覚を味わいます。

Today I review "4321" by famous American author Paul Auster.

This is a big fat book and might be challenging to read.

You want to start over your life?

You sometimes look back your life or a turning point in your life?

4321 is the story of Archie Ferguson, but the story goes in 4 different ways: 4 pararell worlds.

When reading 4321, I was absolutely absorbed in this story.

I can say this is the happy feeling you can only get while you're reading a book―one of the reasons people read a book.

The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel

こんにちは、日差しを避ける Aki です。

昨日に引き続き Yann Martel の本を紹介します。"The High Mountains of Portugal" です。

この本は邦訳はされていません。癖のある本のため、もしかしたら今後もされないかもしれません、表紙は相変わらず可愛らしいのですが。

自分は知人にこの本を紹介され、こちらを先に読んだ後、その後に "Life of Pi" を読みました。

前作と同様、物語の背景には宗教がからんできます。ただ、宗教知識は特に必要ありません。

3つの章からなり、それぞれが短編のように独立していますが、大きなつながりがあります。

話全体としてのキーワードはチンパンジーでしょうか。

YouTube で著者の講演動画を見たのですが、この本を書くにあたっては彼のインドでの経験が元になっているそうです。これは "Life of Pi" でも同じですね。

2作とも動物が出てきます。著者が経験した、インドでの「ゾウ」へ対する扱われ方が影響しているそうです。

アメリカ Amazon での評価は、高評価、低評価で分かれています。やはり、というべきかもしれません。

ちなみに Aki は今後、この人の新作が出たら迷わず買うことになるでしょう。

Today I introduce probably a little controversial book "The high mountains of Portugal" by Yann Martel.

Yann Martel again!. I borrowed this book from an acquaintance of mine, then I read "Life of Pi" that I reviewed yesterday.

"The high mountains of Portugal" consists of 3 stories, which are, as a whole, connected.

I watched YouTube to grab some ideas behind his work. 

In "Life of Pi" and "The high mountains of Portugal", you notice that animals appear in his books.

In the video, he mentioned his experience in India where he learned how an elephant was considered as a sacred animal.

A chimapanzee is the keyward in this book.

You guys might find this book weired, strange, or too much original. 

Well, at leat, worth a try".

こんにちは、ミートパイが食べたい Aki です。

今日は Life of Pi、邦題「パイの物語」を紹介します。

映画化もされていて、映像のクオリティが高いらしいです。

ざっくりまとめると、「漂流記」です。

多くの日本人にとっては物語の前半部分は退屈に感じるかもしれません。

前半は少年パイの生い立ちや宗教観が書かれています。映画は見ていませんが、恐らくカットされているのでは。物語後半にはほぼ影響がないので、興味のない人は流し読みでも大丈夫かもしれません。

自分は無神論者ですが、宗教の話は好きなので面白く読めました。

宗教に馴染みがないと話が入っていかないと思います。

日本人には退屈というより、「分からない」話かもしれません。

まぁ結局、それが退屈につながるですが。

後半！

面白いです。

海に関する小説だと、"The Old Man and the Sea" （老人と海）しか読んだかことはないですが、面白いですね。舞台が海の上というのが独特な緊張感をもたらしてくれます。

しかも今回は動物付きです、猛獣。

物語がどうやって進んでいくのか、ぜひ読んでみてください。

I used to eat this everyday as a college student in Oklahoma.

By the way, today I reveiw "Life of Pi" by Yann Marte.

Yes, that Pi, not that Pie.

Not only a fun adventure at sea, but also....

To be honest, the first part of story might be a little dull and difficult to get through.

It just depends on who read this book. I enjoyed it.

Anyway, the story then goes like this: a teenage boy Pi drifts across the Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat

....with a Bengal tiger.

How can he survive 227 days in the Pacific Ocean?

Not only a fealful adventure at sea, but also a jouney of faith.

You can enjoy this beautiful story with DVD as well.

こんにちは、お盆で実家に帰っても本を読んでいた Aki です。

今日ご紹介する本は、"Digital Gold"、邦訳では「デジタル・ゴールド」です。

ビットコインって聞いたことはありますか？この本は、ビットコインの誕生から現在までの歴史を綴っています。

章が細かく分かれており、ぐいぐいと読ませる本です。

Aki はビットコインに関して完全に無知だったため、日本が話の中に頻繁に出てきたのは意外でした。そもそもビットコインは、サトシ・ナカモトという正体不明の人物が作り出したものです。

名前は聞いたことはありましたが、本の序盤では彼（彼ら？）がある意味主人公みたいなところがあり、何か人間味が感じられ面白く読めました。

ビットコインに少しでもかじっている人が読むと、かなり面白い本だと思います。

全く知らない人？

自分は途中で YouTube 見ました。Bitcoin て検索！

少し中身のことが分かり、面白く読めました。

ビットコインに関わる人間模様を中心に描いた読み物といったところです。

Today I review "Digital Gold" written by Nathaniel Popper.

Have you ever heard of Bitcoin?

"Digital Gold" is a book about Bitcoin, but this book focuses more on humans rather than the new currency itself.

Although I didn't have any  knowledge about Bitcoin, I sensed and smelled something sweet in this book title, Gold.

Word of Warning: You guys cannot make any money by reading this book!

Yes, I know you guys are not expecting such a thing.

I just wanted to make double sure what this book is all about.

I'm sure those who know Bitcoin are able to enjoy this book. This well written inside story really attracts you.

Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance

こんにちは、寝つきが悪い Aki です。

今日紹介する本は、"Elon Musk" です。邦題は、「イーロン・マスク　未来を創る男」です。

Aki の印象では、日本ではスティーブ・ジョブズやマーク・ザッカーバーグに比べて知名度が高くないような気がします。

彼の生み出す製品に日本人があまり関わりがないのが理由と思われます。

知らない人のために紹介しておくと、「電気自動車作って、ロケット作って、火星に移住を企てている人」です。ちなみに、車とロケット両方の会社2つ同時進行です。それと、経営だけに徹するのではく、バリバリ現場で働いています。それぞれの業界で、トップクラスの専門知識持ってる人間と対等に議論します。

Aki は自伝は普段あまり読みません。福翁自伝が大好きで何回も読んでいます（気に入っている箇所だけ）。

Aki は読書中に付箋をつけることはありませんが、この本にはいくつかついています。

1箇所のみ要約して紹介します。

「専門知識をつけるためには、教科書を読むこと」

「ゲームは好きだけど、世の中のためになる仕事を考えていた」

勢いで2つ紹介してしまいました。

Hi, it's sleepless Aki.

Today I review "Elon Musk" written by Ashlee Vance.

I suppose I don't have to introduce him to endlish speakers like you guys.

Yes, he makes a car and a rocket, and then goes to Mars.

As the titile suggests, this is a biography of Elon Musk.

The reason I took this book is that I wanted to know how he gained those knowledge required for running (not just running, but also working as a sort of engineer) both Tesla and SpaceX.

Here is a quote:

Musk had spent months studying the aerospace industry and the physics behind it. From Cantrell and others, he'd borrowd Rocket Propulsion Elements, Fundamentals of Astrodynamics, and Aerothermodynamics of Gas Turbine and Rocket Propulsion, along with several more seminal texts.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

こんにちは、雷で窓がぶるぶるしてます、Aki です。

1回目の書評は、"The Book Thief" 、邦訳では「本泥棒」です。

1、2年程前に読んだのですが、好きな本なので紹介します。

「ナチス政権下」の話です。

字が読めない女の子（読めるように勉強していきます）が主人公です。

Aki は、重い小説が苦手です（物理的な重さではなく）。ドラマや映画でも初めから終わりまで何事もなく、心をざわつかせるものがないものが理想です（一般ウケはしなさそうですが）。

道尾秀介さんの小説いいですよね、凄いですよね。でも重い話も多いですよね（以前、よく読んでいました）。

Aki は心の平穏を取り戻すため、ワンピースやキングダムなどの漫画を手元に用意していました。

"The Book Thief" が好きな理由、それは、重くなりがちなストーリーを軽やかな読ませる仕掛けがしてあるからです。

そう、語り手が「死神」なのです。

死神は人間に感情移入しません。人間にとっての悲劇は、死神にとっては喜劇にも見えるのかもしれません。

女の子は文字を覚えていきます。本に出会います。小さな冒険をするかもしれません。大切な人にも出会います。悲しい出来事もあるかもしれません。

死神が紡ぐストーリー、それが "The Book Thief" です。

あ、映画もあります、ちなみに。

Hi, it's Aki. Wow!, what a terrible thunder outside....

Here is my first book review: "The Book Thief"

I read this book 1, 2 years ago. Still, I really like this book, so let me introduce this one as my first book review.

This is a story of a girl, not literate in the beginning, in Germany before and during the WWII.

I usualy need much energy when I read a sad, tragic, or depressed story. So, I always have comic books like "One Piece, Naruto, etc." so that I can fix my mood after reading sorrowful stories.

I didn't expect that "Death" who narrates this story saves my mood. Because "Death" doesn't have heart like humans, this narrator gives even some humor in this story.

Just read and see how this girl experiences her life.
