綺麗な文章。適度に描かれた描写。

シンプルな文章が心地良い。

1人の少年と謎の多い一人の老人。

年の離れた2人の程よい友情、絆。

Odo Hirsch の他の作品は来年是非、読み漁ってみたいです。

Hi, it's Aki whose eyes are not doing their job properly these days. I have to keep an eye on them.

I introduce a children's book today, which is "Antonio S And The Mystery Of Theodore Guzman" written by Odo Hirsch.

Unlike an adult book I usually read, the most attractive aspect of a children's book is a simple storytelling without too much descriptions of scenery and characters, although this is also considered the cons in a children's book.

Anyway, what I really liked about this book is its beautiful writings which can be absorbed in my body smoothly and clearly; it seems like listening beautiful music.

Simple, but beautiful words are carefully chosen by the author.

A secret story shared by a boy and mysterious retired actor in a secret room....

The author has written many other stories.

I want to follow them too.

Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann

こんにちは、面白い海外マンガを探しています、Aki です。

今日紹介する本は、レオニー・スヴァンの "Three Bags Full"、「ひつじ探偵団」です。

元はドイツ語で書かれています。

推理小説のくくりですが、主人公はなんとひつじ達です。

彼らの羊飼いが死体で発見され、犯人捜しのためひつじ達が奔走します。

日本語の表紙、タイトルは可愛いのですが、本の中身とのギャップでがっかりする人が多いかもしれません。

 魂の話など出てきたり、抽象的な表現もあるため、日本語版を読む時にはギャップに驚くかもしれません。

逆に自分が図書館で借りた英語版のペーパーバック（下のリンクの本とは違います）の「ひつじ」は全然可愛くない。。。。

続編「Garou」があるのですが、英語、日本語ともに翻訳されておらず、Aki は読むことができません。

Hi, it's Aki, looking for a comic book written in English other than those super hero stories.

Today I introduce "Three Bags full" by Leonie Swann.

This is a detective story main charactered by .... Sheep!

Their beloved shepherd is found dead impaled by a spade.

They search murderer for justice.

This book may not be for a child unlike the title suggests; you will find somewhat difficult concepts in this story such as souls and abyss.

There are many characters:

• Miss Maple (the cleverest sheep probably in the world)
• Mopple the Whale (who never forgets what he saw)
• Othello (a black sheep)

and many other sheep plus humans.

Not to worry, there is a character list (only for the sheep) in the front page.

There is a sequel to this novel, "Garou", though this is not translated in English or Japanese....

相手の主張を変える方法！？ / How to change someone's political views

「choice blindness」という言葉聞いたことがありますか？日本語では「選択盲」というらしいです。

２００５年、ある実験が行われました。

実験参加者に2枚の顔写真を見せ、より魅力的な方を選んでもらいました。

その後参加者に自分で選んだ方の写真を渡すのですが、マジックのトリックを使い、自分の選んでない方の写真を渡しました。

結果、ほとんどの参加者は何の疑いもなく写真を受け取り、その写真を選んだ理由を説明しだしました。

この「選択盲」は様々な分野でも実験されてきましたが、今回は具体的な政策に関して調査されました。

参加者は先ほどと同じように、偽の回答を与えられ、何故その選択をしたのか意見を求められました。

結果は、顔写真の時と同じでした。

例えば消費税の問題。

初めは高い消費税に賛成だったのが、「どちらともいえない」に変わり、最終的には「消費税反対」に意見が変わる、といったものです。

人間は何かを「選択」する時、その意見を批判から守ろうとします。

つまり、思考に柔軟性がなくなってしまう。

そこで強制的に別の「選択」を与えてみると、今度はその「偽の選択」を自分の意見として守ろうとします。

トリックは分かりました。

では、これを実践に応用できるのでしょうか。

ポイントは、どうやって相手に気づかれずに「偽の選択」を与えるか、ですね。

個人的には結構難しい課題かな、と思います。

ただ、思考に柔軟性を与えるのが目的ならば方法はありそうです。

例えば、自分とは別の選択の利点を強制的にでも挙げさせてみる、というのは有効な方法に思えます。

これは自分の思考力を鍛えるのに使えそうですね。

Recent study showed that our political views can be flexible and fragile.

A phenomenon known as choice blindness was discovered by Swedish researchers:

They presented participants with 2 photos of faces and asked the participants to choose the photo they thought was more attractive, and then handed participants that photo. Using a trick used in stage magic, when participants received the photo it had been switched to the person not chosen by the participant (the less attractive photo).

Remarkably, most participants accepted this card as their own choice and then proceeded to give arguments for why they had chosed that face in the first place.

This result revealed a gap between our choices and our ability to rationalize outcomes. This finding has been applied to other fields such as taste for jam, financial decisions, and eye-witness testimony.

This choice blindess was used to see whether the techniqu can be applied to our political views.

Participants were given false-feedback about their choices concerning actual political questions (e.g., climate taxes on consumer goods) and then asked to state their views a second time that same day, and again 1 week later. 

The result was the same as previous experiments. Pariticipants' responses were shifted considerabley in the direction of the manipulation. For example, those who originally had favoured higher taxes were more likely to be undecided or even opposed to it.

These effects lasted up to a week later. When they were asked to give argument or rationalization, the changes in their opinion were larger.

What's the mechanism of this human behavior?

People usually try to defend their choices from criticism. This thinking process likely fixes their flexibilities for considering the benefits of other choices; therefore, the switch of the choice they make removes those defensive attitudes in a forceful manner.

Can it be used in our daily life?

The key point is that how we can switch their choices obliviously in a clever way.

If this difficult (the most difficult) obstacle is achieved, yes we can.

However, enhancing the flexibility of our thinking seems to be easy:

• enumerate the pros of the choice we did not choose

今日は、「The President Is Missing」です。12月に邦訳が出るそうで、邦題は「大統領失踪」です。

元大統領の初小説、ということで注目を浴びていますが、James Patterson の腕によるところが非常に大きいと感じました。

圧倒的な疾走感はベストセラー作家の技術がいかんなく発揮されていると思います。

彼のプロットに、さらに元大統領の持つ知識、経験が加えられ、読み応えのある作品に仕上がっています。

話は、テロリストによるサイバー攻撃の脅威に立ち向かうという王道のような流れですが、ホワイトハウスの内情が少し知れたり、など楽しめて読むことだ出来ます。

Hi, it's Aki who tried century eggs for the first time in my life.

Today's book review is about "The President Is Missing" by Bill Clinton and James Patterson.

The president of US faces a threat of a cyber terrorism which would completely destroy the country.

The president tries to stop the attack and find a traitor who is supposed to be involved in this attack.

This is a typical page-turner book with short chapters as often seen many recent books.

This book is best known as the first novel of Bill Clinton, but I'd say that James Patterson is the main author of this book. 

This plot and story overall are too great for the former US president to produce; nonetheless the spices Bill Clinton added are nicely composed in this story line.

I enjoyed the inside story of the White House and decision making processes conducted by the US president which are made on the daily basis.

万能インフルエンザワクチン / Universal Flu Vaccine

毎年新しく流行るものといえば、ファッション、スイーツ、お笑い芸人、そしてインフルエンザ。

ということで、今日はインフルエンザです。

なぜ毎年異なるインフルエンザワクチンが必要なんでしょう。

同じワクチンが使うことが出来れば、開発費用が不要となり、対応も速くなり、インフルエンザによって死亡する人は激減するはずです。

答えは、インフルエンザウイルスの変異です。

このウイルスの変異ですが、ウイルス全体を細かく見ていくと変異する場所、しない場所が分かってきました。

この「変異しない場所」を利用した万能インフルエンザワクチンが現在開発中です。

現在臨床試験中ということで、近い将来画期的な薬として皆さんも使うことになるかもしれません。

Each year, new flu vaccine is developed for a new type of of influenza virus.

Why?

There are four branches of influenza virus that are changing: two influenza A strains and two B strains. As a result of this constant change, each year there is a different influenza vaccine, containing either three or four comonents; and every year, at least one will change.

 What if a new type of vaccine, universal vaccine which deals with every type of infuenza viruses, available?

Actually, this novel vaccine is now studied in phase I/II clinical trials.

How does this vaccine work? How does it protect against a virus that doesn't yet exist?

Accorindg to a resercher Garcia-Sastre, current vaccine is actually able to induce response to the variable regions of the virus; however, there are other parts of the structure of the viruses that remain unchanged or conserved. This universal vaccine targets this conserved areas.

The flu virus looks like a ball covered with little mushrooms sprouting all over it. These mushroom-shaped proteins are called hemagglutinin, which helps the virus particle bind to and fuse with the targeted human cells. 

The humagglutinin has a head (changeable and variable) and a stalk (stable). 

Yes, the new vaccine targets this stalk area.

How close is this universal flu vaccine becoming reality?

Our initial findings are promising, but we still need to conduct phase II and phase III trials. Hopefully, the vaccine could be ready in five years.

スポンジで海を救う！？ / Wood Sponge Saves the Sea!?

海に油が流出したとします。どうやって回収するのでしょう。

これまでにも様々な方法が開発されてきましたが、効率が悪かったり、費用が高くつくなど、問題点がありました。

今調べてみたところ、相当大掛かりな装置を使うみたいです。

新しく研究されている方法とは、「木製のスポンジ」です。

特徴は2点：

1. 油のみを吸収
2. 再利用可能（現在のところ10回程度）

まだ研究段階ですが、今後実際に活用される時が来るかもしれません。

Oil spills contaminate the sea terribly. How can it be recovered?

There are some techniques to clean up oil such as gravity separation, burning, and biomediation.

Now, researchers have developed a new technique, which is a sponge that specifically absorb oil and can be used repeatedly. This sponge is made from wood.

Conventional methods are not without problems: low efficiency, secondary pollution, and high cost. 

The researches tested its ability on variety of oils such as motor oil and the industrial solvent dichloromethane. The sponges absorbed between 16 and 41 times their weight in oil and could be used at least 10 times for absorption and squeezing.

Further tests and results are to be expected.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

こんにちは、誕生日が近い Aki です。

今日紹介するのは、"The Hunger Game"、邦題は「ハンガー・ゲーム」です。

3部作なので、今回は３冊まとめてのレビューです：

1. The Hunger Game 「ハンガー・ゲーム」
2. Catching Fire 「ハンガー・ゲーム2　燃え広がる炎」
3. MockingJay 「ハンガー・ゲーム3　マネシカケスの少女」

です。邦題はこれで合っているのでしょうか。

映画も有名なこの作品、夏の洋書セールで見つけ、3冊揃っていたこともありまとめて買うことにしました。

結果は、買って正解でした。ヤングアダルト向けの小説ということで、読みやすいです。

1冊読んでは映画を見て、の繰り返しで非常に楽しめました。

ただ、どの小説にも言えることだと思いますが、本を読んだ後だとダイジェスト感は避けられません。純粋に映像として楽しみました。

話は分かりやすいです。

12の区域から少年少女1人ずつ（合計24人）が選出されます。

そして最後の一人になるまで、殺し合いのサバイバルを行います。

その名も「ハンガー・ゲーム」。

3部作の流れですが、ハンガー・ゲームを生き残る戦いから、ハンガー・ゲームというシステムを終わらせる戦いということになります。

一気読み作品です。

Hi, it's Aki whose birthday is coming soon.

My review today is "The Hunger Game", "Catching Fire", and "Mockingjay" written by Suzanne Collins.

This is a famous trilogy and movie-tie in book. 

I read these 3 book along with these movies in this summer.

Story goes as follos:

There are 12 districts and the captial in this worold.

Every year one boy and one girl (24 in total) are chosen from each district to participate in the hunger game. 

Those 24 children kill each other till the last one remains.

Can they survive the game? Does this game exist foreever? What's the point of this game in the first place? 

A typical page-turner book, including short chapters and providing attractive characters.

Reading for fun? Then, this is the book!
