True or False.... Stress Relief by Reading!

www.telegraph.co.uk

The Telegraph

www.comvita.com

English

 Ever heard of this hype?

"You can decrease your stress levels by reading!"

Let's have a closer look on this subject by reading a source jounal.

Study summary

  • They studied the best method of relaxation to reduce stress levels.
  • Results: reading, 68% (the most effective); listening to music, 61%; tea/coffee, 54%; and walking, 42%
  • Took only 6 minutes to gain this effect.

Who and When

Performed by Consultancy Mindlab International at the University of Sussex in 2009.

Oh, quite a long ago than I thought.

Where is....

Ok, I can't find a source academic article in the first place. The information mentioned above is what I got from news sites.

What to do now.....

Spending more than 30 minutes, and I got lost completely.

Give it a try

Gathering those tiny pieces of information, let me review the study.

  • Number of subjects: Unknown
  • Methods: After subjects' stress levels and heart rate were increased, subjects were tested with a variety of traditional methods of relaxation.
  • Measurements: Heart rate/ease tension in the muscles

Simple enough!!

Unknown number of subjects? Ok, fine. I can stop this review here, but let's move on.

Methods seem to be fine as long as the increse range of the stress levels was same as that of other subjects. It's beyond my knowledge, but I believe you. I have to.

Heart rate/ease tension in the muscles are not good for measurements of stress.

Study on a measurement on stress levels has been developed significantly since 2009.

At present, cortisol, also called stress hormone, is condered to be linked with stress.

For stress evaluation, saliva and, especially and recently, hair are used as biomarkers.

Verdict

No good. Absolutely no good

Please remember: my review is based on the information I was able to obtain. I might miss some information regarding the study.

I also have to mention that a future study might prove the effectiveness of reading on stress relief.

And there are other evidence regarding other benefits from reading a book.

So, never mind this result. Just let us enjoy our reading!!
