今日は Brainstorm by Suzanne O'Sullivan です。未邦訳。

突然ですが、幽霊は信じますか？霊感はありますか？神は信じますか？

超常現象にも思われるこういった謎を、脳神経の見地から、著者の経験した症例を元に解き明かしていきます。

具体的には：深夜目を覚まし、顔は壁を向きそこに指を指す、ドワーフ（小人族）が見える、突然走り出してしまう、など。

サブタイトルでは Detective Stories from the World of Neurology とありますが、謎解き要素は基本的には無く、癲癇の話です。ただ、なぜ癲癇が引き起こされるのか、という所は掘り下げられていきます。

本を読んでいる間、どうしても人類の歴史を思い出さずにはいられませんでした。

魔女狩り、エクソシスト、狐憑きなど。

ストレス性による癲ならば確かに効果はあったはずで、救われた人もいたでしょう。

過去の無知は仕方がないとして。

現在の医学では、幽霊が見える原因もおおよそ分かっています。原因といっても人、環境、様々あり、脳だけではありませんが。

霊感商法が現代にまだあるのかどうかは分かりませんが、知識はやはり力ですね。

幽霊は信じちゃいけません！でも畠中恵さんとかめっちゃ好き。

I really like this book, Brainstorm written by Suzanne O'Sullivan.

I'm a medical translator, so I just cannot stop reading this kind of book.

Do you belive in ghost or supernatural phenomenon?

As in the subtitie: Detective Stories from the World of Neurology, from a standpoint of neurology, the author describes cases that she experienced in the clinical practice.

What kind of cases/mysteries?

Such as: 

1. A boy sitting upright at midnight with his head turned so that he was looking over his left shoulder, His left arm was oustretched and he was pointing with his index towards  spot on the wall.

2. A guy who sees dwarf clearly.

3. A woman who suddenly starts running.

et cetera....

While I was reading this book, I couldn't help thinking about witch-hunting or an exorcist.

How many innocents have been killed because of mere ignorance?

And maybe these ignoranct actions still can be seen even today anywhere in a different way.

Umm....expecto patronum!!!!
