僕の洋書を読むスピードは頭が勝手に切り替えてしまいます。読むのが速い順に：
1. ノンフィクション
2. 大人向け小説
3. YA小説
4. 子供向け
5. 詩
6. 漫画
です。
同じ小説というカテゴリーでも本によってスピードは大きく変わるのですが、描写が少なくなると頭で想像する量が増えるためか、文字が少なくなればなるほど読むスピードは落ちてきます。
昨年からですが、頭の中で声を出さなくても小説も読めるようになりました。
文字から勝手ににょきにょきっとイメージが出てくるようになったためで、声を出さなくても楽しめるようになりました。
『brown girl dreaming』という本を昨日読みました。
文字、本、読書、書くことの楽しみを思い出させてくれます。
小さい頃、何故か同じ本（漫画です）を何度も何度も繰り返して読んでいた記憶があります。
お気に入りのシーンがあってそれを声に出したりして、それがとにかく楽しかったんです。
あの頃みたいな読書をしてみたいな、という気持ちにさせてくれました。
大切な一冊となりました。

My general reading speed varies according to books (in order of fastest to slowest):
1. Nonfiction

Furthermore, among the novels the reading speed changes depending on the difficulty, genre, types of the story, and, date of publication.
I can read without subvocalization (producing voice in your head while you read), so nonfiction is the easiest to read faster because you don't have to imagine the story and characters, unlike fiction books. You can focus on picking up the information from the book.
But last year I became able to read fiction books without subvocalization as well.
As I read a book, images appear from each word as if verdant stems grow from words.
This occurs even when I don't read a loud in my head, helping my read without dropping the reading speed.
But when it comes to easier books (children books) and poems, my reading speed usually drops (significantly for poems).
This is because there are less descriptions in children books; I have to spend much energy and time to imagine the scenes, which is the fun part of reading books though.
I yeasterday finshed reading "brown girl dreaming" written by Jacqueline Woodson.
This is a story of childhood of the author.
She is mesmerized by letters, books, poems, and writing.
she teaches me how to devour
the word
and its taste
and its sound
and its feeling,
by taking much time.
the faster the better?
the slower the better?
as you like.

Life of Pi で有名な Yann Martel (ヤン・マーテル) の本はいずれも読み解くのが難しいものばかりです。
ただし使われている単語は比較的簡単、文章もシンプル、ストーリー自体も比較的分かりやすいものです。ページ数も決して多くありません。
『Life of Pi』と『The High Mountains of Portugal』の2冊を過去に読みました。
彼の作品の中には宗教、哲学、歴史的なテーマが何か一つあり、それを大前提に物語が始まります。
テーマは作品の核となるものですが、必ずしも物語の表面に出てくるものではなく、テーマを物語に組み込ませる方法が異質なので、読者の根気と読み解く力が必要です。
ページをめくれば一体何の話だったか分からなかったものが徐々に紐解けてくる、というものではありません。他の小説のように読んでいたら最後までよく分かりません。
彼の本は解読するつもりで読む本です。
書評では星1つか星5つに分かれる、そういった作品が特徴の Yann Martel ですが僕の大好きな作家さんの一人です。
『Beatrice and Virgil』はページ数が少なく200ページと薄く普通なら4時間もあれば読み終わりそうな本ですが、僕は6時間以上かけて読みました。
あらすじを本来ならここで書かなければないのですが、彼の本においてあらすじ自体はさほど重要ではないと思えてきました。

YouTube で講演動画を観たことがありますが、作品の根底には彼なりのがっちりとした論理がきちんとあることが分かります。
難解さゆえか、それとも書評を平均化すると評価が高くないためか彼の作品で邦訳されているのは『Life of Pi』のみです。
映画化もされましたが、難しいところは全カットされていて、美しい映像、あっと驚く物語のみが採用されています。
こういった難解で癖のある作品を好きな人は日本人に結構多いと思います。
もっと邦訳がされて日本での彼の知名度が上がることを期待しています。

Yann Martel, a super-favorite author of mine, is best known for "Life of Pi", which later became a beautiful movie by removing important scenes, at least to the author.
I have read "Life of Pi" first, then "The High Mountains of Portugal" that was published in 2016.
This book "Beatrice and Virgil" was published in 2010, nine years after "Life of Pi".
Yann Martel writes literature books in which readers have to try to find key ideas and what the author is trying to say.
Even after reading it, readers might not be able to see the meaning of some of the scenes; the readers must interpret the unfathomable story that is not even supposed to be a mystery all by themselves.
But what makes his books so unfathomable?
Yann Martel has a clear theme in each book, in which he presents certain ideas explicitly or implicitly such as religion, philosophy, or a historical event.
So, what's the theme in this book "Beatrice and Virgil"?
Holocaust
Yes, he writes "Holocaust" in hiw own way as usual.
Sadly I just can't explain or describe the book very well.
It's alway too difficult to explain his books comprehensively even though the story itself of his books is usually simple.
It's a thin book (less than 200 pages for my version of the book).
I strongly urge you to read it. It won't hurt you very much.
His work is worth to challenge at least once.

YouTube でどっぷり英語漬け（おすすめ海外動画）
勉強と娯楽
僕は医薬の在宅翻訳者ということで、家でどのように仕事をしてようが基本的には自由です。
仕事中は翻訳の内容にもよりますが、海外のポッドキャストや YouTube (音声だけ) を聞いていることが多いです。
仕事が終わってもだらだらと YouTube、 洋書、Anki (単語) と一日中英語漬けです。これは全て趣味や娯楽に近いです。
他の人にとっては地獄のような勉強スケールかもしれませんが、僕にとっては毎日休日感覚です。
勉強（努力）と感じるか、遊びと感じるかは主観だと思っています。
勉強は辛いので僕も長続きすることはあまりないです（医薬翻訳には勉強が必須なのですが、僕にとってはキングダムを読むのと同じくらい楽しいものです）。
英語の勉強と聞くだけで、心の奥底にどんよりとした感覚を覚える人も少なくないと思います。
ということで、楽しくて楽しくて時間があっという間に溶けてしまう、そんな海外動画を紹介します。
チャンネル紹介
普段はテキストを使ったり、字幕を付けて映画やドラマを観たりしている人が多いと思います。
普段たっぷりと字に触れている分、ここで紹介する動画はあまり文字に頼らずに、気楽に観て欲しいと思います。文字に頼らないというのは意外と大切なことです。

留学中に一人だけシンガポールからの留学生の知り合いがいましたが、ここまで訛りが強かったかどうか覚えていません。
色々な動画を出しており、全て英語字幕付きです。
意外と知らない人が多いのですが、世界で話されている多くの英語は訛りつきです。

新しい動画は出していないようですが、過去に出した動画が観られます。
歌がとにかく面白い（個人的には The Cabin が一番好き）。

最後に
他にも登録しているチャンネルはいくつもありますが、難易度や動画の好みを考えて今回は割愛します。
ニュース関係の動画が一つもないのは英語的な理由ではなく、単に僕が興味を持てないという理由です。
一日中英語で動画を観ることを何度か繰り返していると、歌の節が頭から離れないように、頭の中に英語のリズムが流れることがあります。
その頭の中に聞こえるリズムはすごく重要で、リスニングにも重要ですし、英語を発音する時にはそのリズムに沿うことでイントネーションをつけるのにも役立ちます。
とはいいながら、あまり細かいことは気にせずに楽しんで観てくれたら嬉しいです。
Yoss by Odo Hirsch

普段は児童向けの本を書く著者の初の YA 本です。
Odo Hirsch はオーストラリア出身で、日本では全くの無名作家。邦訳も一冊もされていません。ただし自分のお気に入りの作家さんです。
お気に入りの作家さんとはいっても Antonio S and the Mystery of Theodore Guzman の一冊しか読んだことがありません。
言葉の選択、ちょっとした描写、文章の組み立てなどが自分の好みにピッタリなのです。
これは感覚的、感性みたいなもので、個人で大きく異なるため僕の評価は他の人には全く当てはまらないもの。ということで Goodreads での評価もいまいちです。
村の少年 Yoss が村のしきたりに参加します。
村を出発し翌日に帰ってくるというもの。大人になるためのしきたりです。
Yoss は村を出発し湖を目指します。湖に向こう側には町があります。
町の魅力に惹かれた Yoss は湖で引き返さずにそのまま突き進みます。
山に囲まれた村で育ってきた純真無垢な Yoss。
彼の常識とは大きく違う町の風景。それは町の人間も例外ではなく。。。

Yoss, a boy growing up in a small village surrounded by mountains, departs the village this year, and returns to the same village next day. At least he is supposed to be.
This is a ritual of this village; each year a boy or a few boys leave the village and return to the same place the following day to prove themselves to be a man.
Long ago, the ritual was more meningful than this current one, which is now just a symbol meaning nothing.
Back then boys used to march beyond a lake and bring back something useful to the village: skills and knowledge like milling, carving, metalworking, thatching,..
But, there were some boys who never returned to the village after the departure.
There is a town beyond the lake.
Towns swallow men up, Yoss. They're hungry. People disappear into them and are never heard of again.
This is the beginning of the story.
Yoss, a pure and innocent boy who doesn't doubt anything, decides to go to a town.
Where chaos, good and mostly bad, awaits him.
This book is the first YA book written by my favorite author Odo Hirsch even though I have read just one another book of his, Antonio S and the Mystery of Theodore Guzman.
I can fully enjoy some books even from small conversations, encounters with someone, or just beads of beautiful words.
In that case, I don't much care a story itself as long as the book is written so: The book Thief, River Boy, The Housekeeper and the Professor, The Alchemist, you name it.
Some find these books boring.
Or these books actually might not even have a convincing ending.
Still, I really liked this book.
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

人体発火にどうしても目がいきますが、至極まっとうな小説です。
「燃え上がる子供」というキャッチ―なテーマがあり、それに振り回されはしますがこの本の良さは純粋に主人公と子供達との物語だと感じます。

Lillian, getting bored of her life and spending a miserable life, visits her old friend Madison. It's been a long time since their last meeting even though they continued exchanging letters since then.
The story's plot itself is rather normal.
Lillian meets twin kids, spends time together, faces some toubles, and finally finds light in her life.
EVEN THOUGH THESE TWINS CATCH ON FIRE.
No harm for them at all, but any surroundings.
But is this extraordinariness that makes this book so special?
No, I don't think it does much.
It is these twins themselves (and Lillian) who make this this book so deep, absorbing, and attractive.
"Ok"
They often use this word, "Ok" in reply. Nothing more, nothing less.
Just "Ok".

I felt various emotions in this simple "Ok": acceptance, gratitude, and comfort.

The Dark Forest（暗黒森林）by Cixin Liu

三体シリーズの第二巻、"The Dark Forest (暗黒森林)"。
凄い本です。とても一人で書いているとは思えない内容です。
序盤は文学的な雰囲気が色濃く、前作から印象が大きく違うなと感じていたのですが、そこから怒涛の展開です。
まずは破格のスケールで繰り広げられる頭脳戦、そしてこれぞ SF と思わせる圧倒的な展開で迎える物語の後半。
本を読んだ！という満足感でいっぱいです。

"The Dark Forest" authored by Cixin Liu is the sequel to "The Three-Body Problem (三体)", which is the first volume of The Three-Body Problem trilogy.
Even though I gave five stars to "The Three-Body Problem" on Goodreads, the actual score according to my impression was probably around 4.5 (I just round it up).
This book, however, was totally different!!
I still cannot believe the author created this story teemed with extremly complicated plots and scientific materials all by himself.
Having read "The Three-Body Problem", I've got an impression of literature from the first part of this book, which of course still gives readers full of entertainment and suprizes.
Next as I read through the book to the middle part of book, I was totally baffled about how the story had turned into a battle of mind, reminding me of "Death Note".
What's coming next?
A wholly new world.
Let me just leave the rest of the story veiled for your delectation...
I highly recommend this book from bottom of my heart.

コロナウイルス：対策・予防の要点
様々な情報が飛び交っています。
自分の頭の中を整理するためにも、コロナウイルスの要点をまとめてみます。
WHO、The New England Journal of Medicine、 The Lancet、他サイエンス系記事を参考にしています。
インフルエンザ対策と同じです。
ただ、ワクチンや薬がなく対症療法（根本的な病気の治療でなく、症状を軽減するだけの治療）しかないコロナウイルス。対策の精度、レベルを上げることが重要です。
そのためにはやたらめったらなんでもすれば良い、というわけではありません。
ウイルス感染のポイント
どういう時に感染するのか、ポイントをしっかりと頭に入れておくことにより、自分達である程度感染リスクを判断できます。
同じ東京に住んでいる人でも生活環境、行動範囲などは大きく異なるため、感染のリスクを正しい知識を持って判断出来るようになることが重要です。
- ウイルスは口、目、鼻を通して粘膜から感染する（顔を絶対に触っていけない）
- 飛沫（唾、鼻水）から直接感染する。
- 飛沫から間接的に感染する（例：飛沫が手すりなどに付着→触る→自分へ。マスクの外側に付着している他人の飛沫→触る→自分へ）。
以上が絶対に覚えておかなければならないポイントです。
マスクの有効性
粒子の大きさを鑑みれば細菌には有効だがウイルスに無意味、など様々な議論があり、自分もマスクの有効性を示すエビデンスは知りません。様々な記事はあるのですが、統計手法に疑問だったり論理性に穴があるものが多いです。
飛沫は粒子を水分で含みながら飛ぶため面積が大きくなるためある程度は有効かも、ぐらいには思うこともありますが、そんなことは素人の僕が思いつく程度なので専門家も当然考慮しているでしょう。
ただ一つ言えることは、手元にあるならした方が良いということです。
マスク有効性の是非は専門家の間で意見が分かれます。
ということはどちらの可能性もあります。ならば、マスクをつけることに損は無いです。
ただし、マスクをつけるリスクもあります。
外す時に最大限の注意が必要です。マスクの外側には飛沫が付着しているかもしれません。
マスクは目、口、鼻に近い位置にあります。外す時は慎重に行ってください。
マスクを鼻からずらしてつけたり、つけている最中に位置を直したり、一度外したものをつけ直したり、全部危険です。それならつけない方が良いのではないかな、と思ってしまいます。
コロナ感染リスクのケーススタディ
3密を基本に上に挙げたポイントを組み合わせます。3密の状態では飛沫が直接的に、間接的に他人へと移りやすいです。
様々なシチュエーションを感染リスクの要点とともに、以下にまとめてみました。
居酒屋：人が密集。マスクをはずしての会話（直接飛沫）。
電車：人が密集。手すりの利用（間接飛沫）。会話は少ない？
スーパー、デパート：密集度。お店の大きさ。買い物客の多さ。
公園を散歩：人の密集度。開放的。直接飛沫、間接飛沫ともに少なそう。
映画館：人の密集度。間接飛沫は少ない？会話（直接飛沫の可能性）は飛び交わない？
記者会見：密集度。会場の広さ。記者の数。
対策
- 石鹸での手洗い（間接飛沫を洗い流します。）
- 密集での人混みを避ける（直接飛沫、間接飛沫を防ぎます。）
- 顔を絶対に触らない
- マスク？（つけて損はない。外す時に最大限の注意。外した後に手洗い。）
最後に
感染した後の予後には年齢が関係してきます。
ただ、感染するかどうかには年齢は関係ありません。
感染しない方が良いです。
