先月？読み終わった本、The Lord of the Rings の感想です。

この本は3部作なので３冊に分かれているのですが、 Aki が読んだ本は 「3 冊を 1 冊に収めてありますバージョン」です。解説などを含めると 1000ページになります。

映画としても有名なこの作品ですが、Aki は全く予備知識もなく読み始めました。

登場人物がとにかく多く、ガイドブック的な本を買ったり、YouTube でキャラクターのイメージを掴んだりしながら読み進めました。

あらすじ

ホビット族のフロッドは、ある不思議な指輪を授かります。

そして言われます。

「この指輪はやばいやつ。この世に存在すると世界が混沌。基本何しても壊せんでマグマん中ぶち込んでこい。」

感想

約 70 年ほど前に書かれた作品であり、現代の作品のような読みやすさはありません。

文体も非常に難解であり、その世界観を表現するため、特に喋り言葉では独特な文法も用いられています。

フィクション（特に SF）の魅力は、その作品の世界に浸り、自分の頭の中に描かれるストーリーに没頭できることだと思います。

この作品を読んでいると、途中からセリフが踊りだしてくることがあります（この作品に限りませんが）。

ドワーフやエルフが話している言葉も、独特な言葉で話されているからこそ頭に心地よく響いてきます。

繊細な背景描写も、物語を暗く、重く引き立てていきます。

全体的に作品には暗さを感じさせます。

物語全体を覆っている薄暗さが、時折訪れる明るい話を一層引き立たせます。

物語を全て読み終わり、「ファンタジーって凄いな」と誰にでも浮かびそうな感想が自然と出てきました。

My book review today is about "The Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkien.

This everyone-knows-the-title book was listed as one of favorite books of Elon Musk, which was an enough reason for me to have a look at it.

I haven't even watched the movie, so I simply knew nothing about the story.

Story

"Frodo, destroy the ring"

In a usually story, they go adventures to obtain something, beat someone evil, or become No.1 by acquiring something:

• Harry Potter beats Voldemort
• Goku wants to become stronger
• Elon Musk wants to go to the Mars

If you put "the ring", you could get a power to control/dominate the world (with a huge risk). Once you put the ring, you are strongly and forcefully attracted to the ring.

The existence itself of the ring endangers the world....

Frodo brings piece to the world by destroying the own power.

He brings the ring as a neckless, meaning that if he wants, he can put the ring whenever.....

There are 2 heros in this adventure:

Frodo: A small, normal, and peaceful guy, leaving his precious village to destroy the ring.

Aragorn: A super hero guy, born from royalty.

Strength Frodo possesses differs from what is usually thought to be.

Darkness illuminates the story, and brightness veils the story as well....

Light and dark.

Read the story. You are soon absorbed into the world—Middle earth.

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

こんにちは、およそ2年ぶりぐらいに車を運転しました Aki です。

かなり今更ですが、今日は Dan Brown の "The Da Vinci Code" の紹介です。

2、3年前に読んだのですが、最近になってもう一度さらっと読み返しました。

この本は近所の図書館にあるのですが、こちらは illustrated edition ということで、写真付きなんです。

中学校で使った社会の資料集のような雰囲気。

情景、建物、その内観など様々な描写が出てきますが、綺麗な写真や絵画などが理解を助けてくれ、物語により入り込めるようになっています。

ルーブル美術館で起こった殺人事件。

パリを訪れていた大学教授、Langdon は捜査協力を求められる。

聖杯、キリスト、Da Vinci などのキーワードから、事件に係る謎を解明していく。

読書による疑似体験を味わいたい人は、是非！

Hi, it's Aki, drove a car yesterday for the first time in  2 years.

Recently I read "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. This is my second time to read this book in the library where there is an illustrated edition.

In this illustrated edition, you can follow the story with a lot of picturesque pictures that would provide you clear images of vairous keywords.

There happed a murder in Paris's Louvre Museum..

Professor Robert Langdon who was giving a lecture in Paris was summoned to The Louvre to provide some help.

FACTFULNESS by Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Ronnlund

こんにちは、ウチの猫が虫を追いかけて踊り狂ってます、Aki です。

今日紹介する本はちょっと特別です。

出来るだけ多くの人に読んで欲しい本です。

ハンス・ロスリング著、ファクトフルネスです。

翻訳者は上杉周作、関美和。

どうでもいい話（本の中身を知りたい人はスキップ！）

この上杉さんですが、Aki は周作さん以外のご家族に10年程お世話にっています。

お兄さんの周作さんのことは話だけ聞いていました。

弟の方は自由人で天才型という感じですが、お兄さんの方は秀才の上、スケールもでかい人なんだろうな、とずっとイメージしていました。

実際そうでした。

さて本書に戻りますが、ここまで書いておきながら自分は邦訳版の方は読んでいません。

ただ、邦訳の方を是非おすすめします。

文芸に関しては、原書が一番だと思っています。

ただ、ビジネス書のようなノンフィクションに限っては邦訳版が優れていることも多いです。

Streampunks という本があります。邦訳タイトルは「YouTube革命」。

この本、翻訳者の他に解説者がいます。

落合陽一さんです。

原書には情報の間違いもあったりするのですが、翻訳時には調査も行うため、正しい情報に訂正されていることもあります。

このように、邦訳書には付加価値をつけられることもあります。

邦訳版一般的に言えると思いますが、ビジュアル的（図、表）には日本の方が優れているように感じます。日本人の感性に合ってる、とも言えるかもしれません。

本の内容

正しく、柔軟で、様々な角度から統計学的に物事を見ましょう、という本です。

この本の何が優れているか。

自分の頭で情報の真実に近づくことができるようになる、そんなヒントをくれます。

確実に真実に辿り着けるとは限りません。ただ、情報の渦にのみこまれない、そんな新しい考え方、頭の使い方を教えてくれます。

パズルを解くよりも、クイズに頭を捻るよりも、格段に知性のレベルは上がると思っています。

なぜなら、テレビ、ネット、SNS、現在世の中は情報に溢れているからです。

目にする、耳にするニュースが正しい情報を伝えているとは限りません。ある意味では正解でも、別の角度からみたら間違っている、ということもあるかもしれません。

医薬翻訳者なら、Wikipedia の情報の危うさにも敏感です。サイトに入る時、ピリッとしますよね。

ヤフーニュースで30分ほど、色々な記事を見てきました。

「関係者」「30代男性によると」「こんな声も聞かれた」などなど。

思わず、「サンプル数！！」と声を上げたくなるような言葉に満ちていました。

ファクトフルネスではそういった小さな情報ではなく、一般的に当たり前だと思われている常識に目を向けさせてくれます。なので余計に衝撃なんです。

世界の貧困率、世界の生活水準、乳幼児の予防接種率など。

あなたが思っているその常識、正しいですか？

世界は思っているほど悪くない

この言葉、物凄く重いです。

口に出すのは怖いです。

なぜなら、間違って受け取られるからです。

現在貧困に苦しんでいる人だっている！そんな人達をほったらかしにするのか！

違います。正しい現在地を知ることが重要なんです。

ほったらかしにするとは一言も言っていないのにそんな批判も出てきます。

状況は全く異なっても、似たような状況はあると思います。

真意が汲み取れずに、言葉尻を執拗に突っつく。

そんな方にファクトフルネス。

Let's talk about everybody-loves-it "Factfulness" authored by Hans Rosling with Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Ronnlund.

What makes this book so different and great?

With statistical data, "Factfulness" gives you new insights on facts that supposed be "facts".

Not to worry, you don't have to have any statistical knowledge or math brain.

You read it and you'll be armed with a new brain that makes you look the world with a different view.

We are now surrounded by tons of information without noticing them (especially SNS).

Ever heard/read any news this week? And are you sure those information are correct? Where's the source?

I'm sure you are familiar with world's reality beucase you must have seen them on the TV or learned in the school.

Are you sure the facts (e.g. low-income countries across the world, life-expectancy of the world, electricity availability in the world) in your knowledge are correct?

"Factfullness" gives you not only new insights, but also way of thinking (logical thinking).

You are not given just correct facts. You can learn to think by yourself about information you'll face in you daily life.

You'll face some information in the futre and think about it.

Your new answers obtained from your new way of thinking might be not exactly correct, but definitely, at least, you would be nearer to the true fact.

Mayby the world is not so bad.

Cannot say this word so easily. It sounds like you ignore remaining people who are still suffering.

Factfullness --- for those who took the word as negative.

New world always stands besides you. It depends on how you look the world and how you face the fact.

こんにちは、視力がどんどん落ちていく Aki です。

今日は児童文学、Odo Hirsch による Antonio S And The Mystery Of Theodore Guzman です。彼の著作は多数ありますが、いずれも邦訳はされていないようです。

綺麗な文章。適度に描かれた描写。

シンプルな文章が心地良い。

1人の少年と謎の多い一人の老人。

年の離れた2人の程よい友情、絆。

Odo Hirsch の他の作品は来年是非、読み漁ってみたいです。

Antonio S. and the Mysterious Theodore Guzman

Hi, it's Aki whose eyes are not doing their job properly these days. I have to keep an eye on them.

I introduce a children's book today, which is "Antonio S And The Mystery Of Theodore Guzman" written by Odo Hirsch.

Unlike an adult book I usually read, the most attractive aspect of a children's book is a simple storytelling without too much descriptions of scenery and characters, although this is also considered the cons in a children's book.

Anyway, what I really liked about this book is its beautiful writings which can be absorbed in my body smoothly and clearly; it seems like listening beautiful music.

Simple, but beautiful words are carefully chosen by the author.

A secret story shared by a boy and mysterious retired actor in a secret room....

The author has written many other stories.

I want to follow them too.

Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann

こんにちは、面白い海外マンガを探しています、Aki です。

今日紹介する本は、レオニー・スヴァンの "Three Bags Full"、「ひつじ探偵団」です。

元はドイツ語で書かれています。

推理小説のくくりですが、主人公はなんとひつじ達です。

彼らの羊飼いが死体で発見され、犯人捜しのためひつじ達が奔走します。

日本語の表紙、タイトルは可愛いのですが、本の中身とのギャップでがっかりする人が多いかもしれません。

 魂の話など出てきたり、抽象的な表現もあるため、日本語版を読む時にはギャップに驚くかもしれません。

逆に自分が図書館で借りた英語版のペーパーバック（下のリンクの本とは違います）の「ひつじ」は全然可愛くない。。。。

続編「Garou」があるのですが、英語、日本語ともに翻訳されておらず、Aki は読むことができません。

Hi, it's Aki, looking for a comic book written in English other than those super hero stories.

Today I introduce "Three Bags full" by Leonie Swann.

This is a detective story main charactered by .... Sheep!

Their beloved shepherd is found dead impaled by a spade.

They search murderer for justice.

This book may not be for a child unlike the title suggests; you will find somewhat difficult concepts in this story such as souls and abyss.

There are many characters:

• Miss Maple (the cleverest sheep probably in the world)
• Mopple the Whale (who never forgets what he saw)
• Othello (a black sheep)

and many other sheep plus humans.

Not to worry, there is a character list (only for the sheep) in the front page.

There is a sequel to this novel, "Garou", though this is not translated in English or Japanese....

The President Is Missing by Bill Clinton/James Patterson

こんにちは、始めてピータン食べました、Aki です。

今日は、「The President Is Missing」です。12月に邦訳が出るそうで、邦題は「大統領失踪」です。

元大統領の初小説、ということで注目を浴びていますが、James Patterson の腕によるところが非常に大きいと感じました。

圧倒的な疾走感はベストセラー作家の技術がいかんなく発揮されていると思います。

彼のプロットに、さらに元大統領の持つ知識、経験が加えられ、読み応えのある作品に仕上がっています。

話は、テロリストによるサイバー攻撃の脅威に立ち向かうという王道のような流れですが、ホワイトハウスの内情が少し知れたり、など楽しめて読むことだ出来ます。

Hi, it's Aki who tried century eggs for the first time in my life.

Today's book review is about "The President Is Missing" by Bill Clinton and James Patterson.

The president of US faces a threat of a cyber terrorism which would completely destroy the country.

The president tries to stop the attack and find a traitor who is supposed to be involved in this attack.

This is a typical page-turner book with short chapters as often seen many recent books.

This book is best known as the first novel of Bill Clinton, but I'd say that James Patterson is the main author of this book. 

This plot and story overall are too great for the former US president to produce; nonetheless the spices Bill Clinton added are nicely composed in this story line.

I enjoyed the inside story of the White House and decision making processes conducted by the US president which are made on the daily basis.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

こんにちは、誕生日が近い Aki です。

今日紹介するのは、"The Hunger Game"、邦題は「ハンガー・ゲーム」です。

3部作なので、今回は３冊まとめてのレビューです：

1. The Hunger Game 「ハンガー・ゲーム」
2. Catching Fire 「ハンガー・ゲーム2　燃え広がる炎」
3. MockingJay 「ハンガー・ゲーム3　マネシカケスの少女」

です。邦題はこれで合っているのでしょうか。

映画も有名なこの作品、夏の洋書セールで見つけ、3冊揃っていたこともありまとめて買うことにしました。

結果は、買って正解でした。ヤングアダルト向けの小説ということで、読みやすいです。

1冊読んでは映画を見て、の繰り返しで非常に楽しめました。

ただ、どの小説にも言えることだと思いますが、本を読んだ後だとダイジェスト感は避けられません。純粋に映像として楽しみました。

話は分かりやすいです。

12の区域から少年少女1人ずつ（合計24人）が選出されます。

そして最後の一人になるまで、殺し合いのサバイバルを行います。

その名も「ハンガー・ゲーム」。

3部作の流れですが、ハンガー・ゲームを生き残る戦いから、ハンガー・ゲームというシステムを終わらせる戦いということになります。

一気読み作品です。

Hi, it's Aki whose birthday is coming soon.

My review today is "The Hunger Game", "Catching Fire", and "Mockingjay" written by Suzanne Collins.

This is a famous trilogy and movie-tie in book. 

I read these 3 book along with these movies in this summer.

Story goes as follos:

There are 12 districts and the captial in this worold.

Every year one boy and one girl (24 in total) are chosen from each district to participate in the hunger game. 

Those 24 children kill each other till the last one remains.

Can they survive the game? Does this game exist foreever? What's the point of this game in the first place? 

A typical page-turner book, including short chapters and providing attractive characters.

Reading for fun? Then, this is the book!
