今日は Brainstorm by Suzanne O'Sullivan です。未邦訳。

今後も邦訳はされないかもしれません。

突然ですが、幽霊は信じますか？霊感はありますか？神は信じますか？

超常現象にも思われるこういった謎を、脳神経の見地から、著者の経験した症例を元に解き明かしていきます。

具体的には：深夜目を覚まし、顔は壁を向きそこに指を指す、ドワーフ（小人族）が見える、突然走り出してしまう、など。

サブタイトルでは Detective Stories from the World of Neurology とありますが、謎解き要素は基本的には無く、癲癇の話です。ただ、なぜ癲癇が引き起こされるのか、という所は掘り下げられていきます。

本を読んでいる間、どうしても人類の歴史を思い出さずにはいられませんでした。

魔女狩り、エクソシスト、狐憑きなど。

ストレス性による癲ならば確かに効果はあったはずで、救われた人もいたでしょう。

過去の無知は仕方がないとして。

現在の医学では、幽霊が見える原因もおおよそ分かっています。原因といっても人、環境、様々あり、脳だけではありませんが。

霊感商法が現代にまだあるのかどうかは分かりませんが、知識はやはり力ですね。

幽霊は信じちゃいけません！でも畠中恵さんとかめっちゃ好き。

Brainstorm: Detective Stories from the World of Neurology

Hi, it's Aki, chilly-lover not chili-lover nor Chilie-liver nor whatever.

I really like this book, Brainstorm written by Suzanne O'Sullivan.

I'm a medical translator, so I just cannot stop reading this kind of book.

Do you belive in ghost or supernatural phenomenon?

As in the subtitie: Detective Stories from the World of Neurology, from a standpoint of neurology, the author describes cases that she experienced in the clinical practice.

What kind of cases/mysteries?

Such as: 

1. A boy sitting upright at midnight with his head turned so that he was looking over his left shoulder, His left arm was oustretched and he was pointing with his index towards  spot on the wall.

2. A guy who sees dwarf clearly.

3. A woman who suddenly starts running.

et cetera....

While I was reading this book, I couldn't help thinking about witch-hunting or an exorcist.

How many innocents have been killed because of mere ignorance?

And maybe these ignoranct actions still can be seen even today anywhere in a different way.

Umm....expecto patronum!!!!

Animal Farm by George Orwell

こんにちは、休日なく仕事し続ける Aki です。

前回に引き続き George Orwell の作品、"Animal Farm" 「動物農場」です。

100ページ満たない作品ですが、個人的には "1984" よりメッセージ性を強く感じました。

農場の動物達が人間を追い出して、自分達のみで生活していきます。

特にテーマも与えず、ピクサーにこの筋書きのみで作品を作らせたら全く別の物語になりますね。観てみたい。

話が短くてシンプル、分かりやすい。

だから彼の訴えかけるメッセージがシンプルにガツンときます。

ぶひぶひ。

Today I introduce another work from George Orwell, "Animal Farm".

Unlike "1984", this book has less than 100 pages.

Simple concept, simple plot, and story, but....

Not without a soft message at all.

Animals in the farm chase off all humans from the farm to establish their own world.

In this simple story, George Orwell shows us how human beings can become so avaricious. 

I also found the fear of ignorance in this story.

こんにちは、早く人間になりたい！、Aki です。

今日はジョージ・オーウェルの "1984"、「1984年」を紹介します。

有名な作品です。

先月、"Animal Farm" 「動物農場」とともに初めて読みました。

メッセージ性の強い作品です。

完全な監視社会。

話す言葉、書く内容にも自由は認められない。

ありとあらゆる記録は書き換えられ、出版物に使用される言語も数を減らしていく。

言語を統制していくことにより、思想の管理を目指していく。

「二重思考」は作中に出てくる概念で、ざっくり言うと「言ってることとやってることが違う」みたいなものです。

語弊はあるかもしれませんが、「ドラマを観ていて、ささいなことが気に食わないという理由でいじめをする人間に憤る。けれども現実では、あの人のあそこが気に入らない、という理由で憤っていた人間と同じ行動にでる。」のイメージです。

映画や舞台にもなっています。

内容は比較的重いですが、文体は非常に読みやすいです。

暗い内容ですが、ものすごく楽しめました。

読んで良かったと思えた作品です。

Today I review "1984" written by George Orwell.

"Big Brother is watching you."

There is not freedom in your conversations and writtings.

Even facial expression is surveiled. 

Who can you trust? Nobody knows.

"Doublethink"

Doublethink makes you accepts contradictions, holding 2 opposing ideas to be both true: No logic in it.

I was awe of George Orwell for having predicted and foreseen the current world.

"1984" gives anyone who live a current life food for thought.

Maus by Art Spiegelman

こんにちは、近所の猫には挨拶をしていくスタイル、Aki です。

今日は漫画を紹介します。"Maus"、邦題は「マウス」です。

1巻、２巻からなり、Aki は洋書のセールでこの本を発見し、セットになっていたものを買いました。この本のことは知ってはいましたが、日本の漫画のタッチになれているため、手を出すことに躊躇していました。ピューリッツァー賞受賞。

ユダヤ系ポーランド人である父親の記録です。

ナチス政権下、ホロコーストの時代を生き抜いた父親に息子がインタビュー。その内容を漫画にしてあります。

ユダヤ人はネズミ、ドイツ人が猫、ポーランド人が豚の顔で描かれています。

ナチス、ホロコーストをテーマにした本の場合、「誰の視点なのか」、「どうやって物語を綴っていくのか」などで類書と違いを生み出すのだと思います。

その意味でこの本が斬新です。

漫画で描かれているため、読むのエネルギーはそれほど必要ありません。

Hi, it's never-forget-to-say-hello-to-a-neighborhood-cat Aki.

Today I review a comic book "Maus". There are 2 volumes and I bought the complete set.

I've never tried any comic books written in English mostly because of the illustration they draw. Those were not much my taste. I didn't disliked it, but I'm too much used to Japanese comics. 

I found this book sold at some discount in a book store, so I instantly leapt into it.

This books is about a Horocaust survivor Vladek Spiegelman (Polish Jew) who experienced countless hardships and also went through suffering time in Auschwitz.

How was the life during the WWII in the Poland? (and how was the life changed?)

How did he managed to survive the Auschwitz?

Worth to read it.

To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

こんにちは、インスタントコーヒー選びに時間をかけてます、Aki です。

今日紹介するのは、"To kill a Mockingbird"、邦訳「アラバマ物語」です。

有名な作品です。

アメリカの高校では必読書、などと聞くこともあります。

この本のことは名前は聞いたことはありましたが、あまりに有名な文学作品でなんとなく敬遠していました。高尚な作品すぎると自分の場合は楽しめないかな、と考えていました。

数か月前に読んだのですが、ズバリ面白かったです。

今年書かれた作品、と紹介されても違和感を感じないほど、文体などに古臭さを感じさせません。

何より読みやすさ。

今の時代に好まれるような（特に日本で）、軽いタッチで描かれています。

テーマは人としてのあり方、人種差別です。

ただ、重くありません。

Aki は本を読んだ後、図書館で DVD を借りて観ました。

先に DVD を観た後、本を読んでもいいと思います。

ちなみに続編が数年前に出たのですが、評価が分かれています。

"Go Set a Watchman" です。邦訳では「さあ、見張りを立てよ」。

「読まなければ良かった」という声も少なくないそうです。

ある意味、この作品の素晴らしさを証明していますね。

Hi, it's Aki, taking too much time for choosing a instant coffee.

I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" several months ago.

Many of you guys, if grew up in America, might've already read this book in high school.

Although I knew this book is a classic and kind of a must-read one, I avoided reading it just because this book looked too dry to me.

I was simply betreyed in a good way.

I simply enjoyed the story without any stress.

The theme of this book is racial discrimination: this was one of the reasons I avoided this book because I usually read books for fun or at least for my study.

I felt like reading a novel published within a few years; "To Kill a Mockingbird", the storytelling, does not get aged. 

I also watched the DVD as well and enjoyed it as well.

There is a sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird": "Go Set a Watchman".

A guy who told me about this new book said he didn't have a courage to try it because of the too much negative reviews.

Should I?

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

こんにちは、歯磨きしたのか忘れてしまう Aki です。

今日は "Born a crime"、邦訳「トレバー・ノア　生まれたことが犯罪！？」です。

アメリカでは 『The Daily Show』 という、バラエティ番組があります。

政治を風刺するニュース番組風を想像してください。

人気度でいえば、全盛期のめちゃイケやアメトーク、それ以上かもしれません。選挙に少なからず影響も与えます。

トレバー・ノアはその番組の現司会者です。

Aki のアメリカ留学時代、司会者はジョン・スチュワートという人でした。

人気は圧倒的です。

Aki のルームメイトの楽しみは 『The Daily Show』 を見ることです。

Aki の密かな楽しみは、そのルームメイトが番組を見て、ニコニコしているのを見ることでした。

帰国後数年してからジョン・スチュワートから新司会者に代わると知ったとき、番組は終わったと感じました。

Aki はトレバー・ノア司会の 『The Daily Show』 を見たことはないのですが、ネットの評価を見ると、どうやら彼はやってのけたらしいです。

前置きはこれぐらいにして、本の内容です。

自伝です。

大人気コメディアンが書く自伝です。

彼は白人と黒人の混血、カラードです。

「アパルトヘイト」を話題にすれば話は重くなりがちですが、コメディアンの彼の手にかかれば、それはもうすべらない話です。

オーディオブックがあるのですが、彼のナレーションです。

これも良いです。

"Born a crime" by Trevor Noah!!

Actually, I'm not familiar with him.

When I was in America, Jon Stewart hosted "The Daily Show".

Back then, his influence was enormous.

Anyway, Trevor Noah.

I really loved this book. I listened the audiobook as well, loved it too.

The Audiobook is narrated by Trevor Noah himself. 

His way of writing, the structure of the book, and his narration are all good. 

This is his autobiography where he mentions apartheid, too. 

While I was reading, I felt like I was listening his stand up comedy.

I simply liked it.

4321 by Paul Auster

こんにちは、最近の夏の洋書セールで調子に乗ってる Aki です。

今日紹介するのは、ポール・オースターの「4321」 です。

邦訳はまだですが、確実にされますね。柴田さんですかね。

アメリカ文学の作家として超有名人なので、知ってる人は多いと思います。

Aki は彼の作品を読んだのがかなり前で、日本語で読んだのか英語で読んだのか覚えていません。ストーリーは何となく覚えていますが。

この本を手に取ってみた理由は、ずばり本のぶ厚さでしょうか。

京極夏彦さんを思い出しました。日本に比べ、アメリカの書籍は厚いことが多いです。

どこかで聞いたのですが、アメリカでは厚い本をプールサイドなどで読むのがカッコいいとされているようです（完全に記憶違いだったらすみません）。

さて本の中身ですが、主人公ファーガソンの人生を幼少から追っていく話です。

文学では王道ですね。ただ、その話の進み方が普通とは異なります。それは....

4つのパラレルワールドです。

自分の人生を振り返ってみて、「もしあの時、あれをしてたら今の自分はどうなっているんだろう」、「もし自分の親がこんな風だったら、今の自分は...」などと考えることはありませんか。

それです。4人の分身がそれぞれの人生を歩みます。

ページ数が多いため、邦訳では上巻・下巻に分かれるかもしれません。

この本を読んでいる間、自分の世界が 4321 に染まっていました。

どっぷりとこの世界に浸かりました。京極夏彦さんの作品を読んでいる時には、よくこの感覚を味わいます。

Today I review "4321" by famous American author Paul Auster.

This is a big fat book and might be challenging to read.

You want to start over your life?

You sometimes look back your life or a turning point in your life?

4321 is the story of Archie Ferguson, but the story goes in 4 different ways: 4 pararell worlds.

When reading 4321, I was absolutely absorbed in this story.

I can say this is the happy feeling you can only get while you're reading a book―one of the reasons people read a book.
